Apart Kashmir valley may have first of its kind a ‘Rock Garden’ in near future which is likely to come up in central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district.

Deputy Commissioner Ganderbal Showket Aijaz said that they have identified a spot here and is proposing to establish a rock garden to attract tourists.

Officials in the district administration said that a piece of nearly 100 kanals of land lying unutilized has been identified by the district administration and has proposed to floriculture department for creating a rock garden in view of some favorable feasibility and location of the land.

A rock garden, also known as a rockery or an alpine garden, is a type of small field or plot of ground designed to feature and emphasize extensive use of rocks or stones and occasionally boulders, along with a few plants native to rocky or alpine environments.

Plants commonly found in rock gardens are small as they typically do not grow larger than 6 meters in height. So as to not cover up the rocks, they may be grown in containers, or in the ground. The kinds of plants usually are types which prefer well-drained soil and less water.

The usual form of a rock garden is a pile of rocks, large and small, aesthetically arranged, and with small gaps between, where the plants will be rooted.

“We have identified a piece of land in Ganderbal and have asked the floriculture department to visit the spot to see whether a rock garden can be created at the place,” Deputy Commissioner Ganderbal, Showket Aijaz told
